Wearing High Heels Can be Bad for Your Feet

Have a funny feeling in your foot? Maybe it feels like you’re standing on a pebble. You may feel a sharp, burning pain in the ball of your foot. You could even feel tingling or numbness in your toes. All of these symptoms point to a painful foot condition called Morton's neuroma — and its chief cause is high-heeled shoes that cause irritation, pressure or injury to one of the nerves that lead to your toes. At the office of Premier Foot and Ankle Center, LLC, our team of skilled professionals is committed to providing our patients with the highest levels of care. We are well equipped to diagnose and treat Morton’s neuroma with the goal of relieving pain and restoring better foot health for our patients. While wearing high-heeled or ill-fitting shoes is the major culprit for the condition, other risk factors include engaging in high-impact athletic activities (such as jogging or running) that cause repetitive trauma and pressure, and certain foot deformities such as bunions, hammertoes, high arches or flatfeet. Treatments for Morton’s neuroma are mostly nonsurgical and can involve simply changing to wider shoes with lower heels. Custom shoe inserts and pads can also help relieve irritation by lifting and separating the bones, reducing the pressure on the nerve; and corticosteroid injections can help reduce the swelling and inflammation of the nerve, bringing some relief. If conservative treatment does not heal your symptoms, surgery may be recommended. A trusted partner in care At Premier Foot and Ankle Center, LLC, we are committed to helping you maintain healthy feet and pain-free walking. We provide the highest quality care for a wide spectrum of foot conditions. To learn more, or to schedule an appointment, give us a call today.
